Itinerary description

Here's a teaser video at YouTube/Jelbuilder: https://youtube.com/shorts/rUnguDN5hB8?feature=share

This was a fantastic day out climbing the two primary peaks of Mt Barney - East Peak and West Peak.

We commenced at Yellow Pinch Carpark at 6.30am. We went via Logan's Ridge. It took us 1hr from the carpark to get to the actual Rock Scrambling section of Logan's. This was our first time up the route and I have to say it was amazing. Definitely the most fun route going up. There are some technical areas that require care and skill in climbing up. It took us a total of 3hrs to ascend to the summit of East Peak from the carpark up Logan's.

Let me say that if you don't have a head for exposed rock scrambling, then Logan's ridge is definitely not for you. There are some difficult parts that require you to overstretch yourself, or to wedge your legs between rocks, or to saddle rocks in order to pull yourself up. Do not underestimate this route, it is not for the faint of heart. In fact, there is one segment that really should have some rope.... I actually used my son's leg to pull myself up a bit higher (kind of like a rope) to ascend a treacherously difficult part, lol. He is a better climber than me so thank God he gave me a leg up! I rate Logan's Ridge as EXPERT'S ONLY.

After a 5 minute morning tea at the East Peak Summit, we then descended the south side down to Rum Jungle Campsite. This took us 30 minutes. Just before Rum Jungle is Old Hut Site, and a fresh water creek line to refill your water bottles. Absolutely beautiful tasting water.

From Rum Jungle, we then ascended the West Peak route which starts at the camp site to the west. You just start heading up. This was our first time up to this peak. There is a faint trail to follow. Lot's of rock scrambling, beautiful views of East Peak going up. I actually really enjoyed this a lot. Took us around 45 minutes to get to the West Peak summit. The very highest point has a large mound of rocks, and I added a JELBUILDER Rock Cairn to the pile.... however there are lots of trees right at the summit around the rock pile. I would rate West Ridge route as DIFFICULT.

Pushing through the trees (there are slight tracks) will bring you to fantastic views all around on each side of the peak. I thought it would be simply trees at the top, but its not.... there are great views to be had, but don't expect East Peak full 360 degree views due to the trees being present. We had a 20min lunch on the western side enjoying stunning views of the Great Dividing Range and Maroon Dam.

It took us 30 minutes to descend to Rum Jungle. We traversed down South Ridge (aka Peasant's Route) and back to Yellow Pinch Carpark. I cannot stress just how much I loved this entire adventure.... especially Logan's Ridge.

In total, this entire circuit took us 7hrs 5mins (including morning tea and lunch) which was a personal best for us. Our pace was extremely fast to climb the 2 peaks and at the bottom of Peasant's Route, we trail ran all the way back to the carpark. Please ensure you take this into account if looking at my timings for your own research.
