Itinerary description
Path to the summit (about 1,750m above sea level) of mount Artemision, with the ascent made from the north side along the ridge of the mountain, and the descent made from the less steep south side (as suggested). Overall, the path is very well signed (August 2023), especially between the rocks of the ridge to the top, where basic scrambling skills are needed.
The mountain is named Artemision after the goddess Artemis, likely because it is located at the borders between the territories of Mantineia and Argos, and the mountains associated with Artemis were located at borders (the goddess being the protector of passages - Cole, Susan Guettel. "Landscapes of Artemis." The Classical World 93.5 (2000): 471-481). Further, it was on mount Artemision that, in his third labour, Herakles finally captured the golden-horned deer (έλαφος χρυσόκερος) sacred to Artemis.
