Did this walk with a friend this weekend. We planned an overnighter at UpperPortals so were carrying very heavy packs. Some areas marked Private property, but you could technically walk along the creek bed. Very difficult hike up Mowburra with no path anywhere. Antarctic Beech forest at the first summit were wonderful, and the lookout above the slab were tremendous.
The walk down to the saddle and on to Montserrat were completely without tracks of any kind. The vines, rotting vegetation, trees down and head hige ferns were difficult to get through with heavey packs. Following the GPX trail provided on this website made it simple, but would have been VERY hard without it. The first sign of a trail was found at Montserrat lookout (which offered stuning views!), and led quickly down to Upper Portals. Approximately 12k's off track in all made it a tough gig, and took 11 hours.
The wak out from the portals took an hour and a half along the creek.
Very hard walk - glad I dont have to do it again!
