Itinerary description

Mousehole is one of the most exquisite harbour towns in the country, its tight streets hunching down towards a tiny stone harbour scattered with net-stacked fishing boats, ringed by shops and a pub and restaurants. The coast path runs through to Lamorna cove and back but a detour to the Mousehole which the town is named after before you join the narrow path that clings to the sloping, granite-hard cliff face all the way so there's little inland view, but that doesn't matter because the coves you pass, the crashing sea rocks and coastal distances are all eye-gluing. There's even a small wood, Kemyel Crease, for shade. Lamorna cove has a café and inland a restaurant The Cove and a pub called Lamorna Wink, little else except silences and sea. You can rest here and re-trace your steps, or walk inland and take the shorter route back over the fields to Mousehole and a beer in the Coast Guard Garden.

Mousehole Harbour

Mousehole, like Penzance, Newlyn, and Paul, was destroyed in the 1595 raid on Mount's Bay by Spaniard Carlos de Amésquita, the only surviving building being the 'Keigwin Arms', a local pub. Outside the Keigwin Arms (now a private residence) is a plaque with the wording "Squire Jenkyn Keigwin was killed here 23 July 1595 defending this house against the Spaniards".
