Itinerary description
Mount Süphan is a stratovolcano located in eastern Turkey, immediately north of Lake Van. It is the second-highest volcano in Turkey, with an elevation of 4,058 meters, and the third-highest mountain, after Mount Ararat and Cilo Sat. I hiked it in July, my starting point was a road between villages Aydınlar and Kışkıllı. There are stories that peak is forbidden for solo-hikers and with no guide, as I did. :) I did not want to test if it is true, so I tried my best to be as much invisible as possible. Obviously, my intention was successful. :D First day, I reached a meadow at 2600m, where I pitched my tent. The second day, I started very early and made it to the top in 4.5 hours. On the way back just 3 hours were enough to the camp area. The hiking itself is difficult as you have to do 1500m of ascending over not that friendly terrain. There is sand everywhere and it does not help you. The peak area is the most difficult part as you need technical skills, as the rocks are really dangerous. Pay attention!!! After reaching the camp, I walked two hours more to the Aydinlar village, as there were no cars passing. The mountain and views toward Van lake - wonderful experience!
