Itinerary description
The Mount Rosa track is an official track from the Department Of Conservation in New Zealand.
The track starts at the Oxbox Adventure parking. I asked them if there was any problem parking my car there and they said not at all. Only to keep in mind that they close the gates at 4:30 pm so I better come back earlier or the car will get locked inside the business premises. They told me that if I was planning to arrive later than 4:30 pm I could park the car outside of the gates so it won't get locked.
From the car, if we look to the right, we can see one of those big orange triangles from DOC looking. To get there we need to go through the short tunnel.
After about 1 Kilometer we get to a 4WD track that we will follow for a few kilometres.
This track goes up Mount Rosa but also Mount Mason (1043 m).
To get to the summit of Mount Mason we walk for about 2.5 Km on the 4WD track. At that point we get out of the track and walk off-track for about 150 easy meters and we find ourselves at the top of this mountain.
We get back to the 4WD track and after going down a bit we start the ascent of our main summit of the day. After ascending for about 2 Km we will find ourselves at the top part where we will see a Trig point in the distance. This looks like Mount Rosa summit but it is not. For the real summit we need to continue for another 700 meters. There is nothing that says we have reached the summit apart from a few rocks. The Trig point could perfectly be the official summit since the elevation is about the same and the views are even better.
You could get to Mount Rosa also starting from the other side. Starting from Coal Pit Road and from there getting to Coal Pit saddle and then towards Mount Rosa. This track to Ben Cruachan from Coal Pit Road shows how to get to Coal Pit road and from there to Coal Pit saddle.
To go back to the parking we followed the same track that took us to the top.
Keep in mind that there are no trees on this track, not even one, so you are exposed to the direct sun all the way from start to end.
