Itinerary description

Day 5. Mt Leinster East Top 654m, Wexford, Eire (Hewitt).

On many of the peak bagging/outdoor websites I perused for this trip I noted there were very few route descriptions regarding ascents of the lesser known Irish Marilyns/Hewitts. This also applied to the availability of gpx files. I will therefore add relevant information and files that hopefully will provide assistance to future hikers/peakbaggers.

Mount Leinster East Top is an uninspiring rise, just under 2km east of the main top of Mt Leinster. It has no summit marker and Black Rock to the East is far more impressive.
Parking is at the start point at one of those typical forestry track gated entrances. Enough room for around 3-4 cars. After parking walk straight up the forest track in front of you for a a km or so on zig zag path. All easy enough to follow and when you get to the edge of the forest turn left and go straight uphill through the newly planted pines with the established forest boundary on your left. At the top of this new plantation you will have a barbed wire fence but there is a fence style made of stones and a cover for the barbed wire where the old forest meets the new.
Go over the fence and continue on a pathless section uphill and you will eventually meet a defined hill track going from right to left uphill that will take you up to the plateau between Black Rock and Leinster East Top. Here there is a quaint turf cutting hut. Turn left here and head up gently uphill along a peaty path for about another kilometre and a bit until you get to the rather uninspiring summit which is just some raised rocks and grass. It should take about an hour for a fit guy/girl to get to here.
After this retrace your tracks to the plateau and carry on to the more impressive cairned summit of Black Rock if you wish or head off directly down. I would advocate going to Black Rock as there are good views to be had from there. Either way it is easy enough to get back to the start point and from the turf cutting hut it is only about thirty minutes. All in all a good interesting walk.

Parking: Forestry entrance, room for three cars.
Route: A bit of forest track work but mainly good defined hill tracks but on the plateau onwards it is boggy in places with a peat and rock track. A good route though and much better than I thought it would be.
Statistics: 11kms with 441m of height gain done in an all in time of 2hrs 35 minutes.
Maps: Outdoor Active digital Harveys/Irish Topo.
