Itinerary description
Summit from South Mt. Elbert trail near Leadville, Colorado. The trail itself is not difficult but it is a long hike and reaches an altitude of 14,440 ft. We paid a local guide to drive us to the actual trailhead, which is represented by the green starting icon. The four-wheel drive road is rough & wasn't suited for our Acura TL :-)
As you can see, you can save a LOT of walking if you can drive, or find someone to drive you, from the paved parking lot to the trailhead. Note that the start icon has a slightly false reading because those tracks should overlap (visible if you zoom in closely). This trail is a straight out-and-back route. BTW, you can rent a canoe and paddle around the two beautiful Twin-Lakes that are just across the road from the paved parking lot.
