Itinerary description
Please note this trail starts from the top, but that's the exact same way up. I just had forgotten to start recording. It took us a bit over 3h to go up. We took our sweet time to go down.
Mount Bisoke can apparently be very rewarding, from monkey/apes/birds spotting in low altitude to vista of the crater and the DR Congo.
The day we took this hike it had rained during the night, and mud level was high, as well as mist. Monkeys stayed hidden and crater was giant gap of fog.
That made the hike very challenging. On top of the altitude altering breathing for people like us living 36m above sea level, you will slip in mud or over wet stones.
That being said the views over the valley are great, you can spot a few birds and the vegetation change with altitude very interesting.
PS: you need a 4x4 to get to the hike start, our RAV4 was barely enough. You also need permit that you can buy on irembo and show up to the visitor center 30min away at 7am. Not ideal.
PS 2: porters/trackers are useful to hire. Less for carrying your bag but to guide you through the trail and give you a hand either climbing up or for not slipping going down.

Cette randonnée n'est certainement pas à prendre à la légère car la difficulté est bien là, même pour un bon traileur. Certains inexpérimentés abandonnent, parfois rapidement.
Cette 'ballade' reste cependant une expérience extraordinaire malgré les conditions de marche qui pour nous ont été très éprouvantes par l'omniprésence d'une boue collante et épaisse (déc 2022). La descente était un véritable challenge.
Nous avons eu la chance de croiser 3 gorilles sur le sentier, à un mètre de nous. Nous avons été autorisés à rester un peu avec eux. Emotions!
Bref cette expérience restera gravée dans nos mémoires jusqu'à la fin de notre vie.
PS: on accède au départ de ce parcours par une piste très cassante!! - en est témoin le pot d'échappement de notre rav4 qui est resté sur place :-)
PS2: des bâtons de marche sont fournis sur place. N'hésitez pas à faire appel aux "porteurs" qui vous accompagneront même si leur aide peut sembler inutile. Ce sera de toute façon l'occasion d'une belle rencontre et d'être aidé dans les moments les plus difficiles si nécessaire (descente), ils prendront soin de vous.
