Mostar Köprüsü

History of Mostar Mostar is located in the Herzegovina region of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The first settlements began as a small town on the trade route between the Adriatic Coast and the center of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 1468, this place and the surrounding areas came under Ottoman control. In 1566, the Mostar Bridge, the iconic structure of the city, was built by the order of Suleiman the Magnificent. The bridge, a masterpiece, was one of the most important structures built during the Ottoman period. As a matter of fact, even today there are hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world who come to see this bridge. The Austro-Hungarian Empire took control of the region in 1878, and Mostar became part of Yugoslavia during these years. In 1992, Bosnia and Herzegovina declared its independence with the dissolution of Yugoslavia. In the late 1990s the Mostar Bridge was rebuilt. In 2005, it was selected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mostar City Guide
