Itinerary description
Cima Bassa, Monte Stivo e rifugio Marchetti dal passo Santa Barbara
Safe is the shelter of the Three Jewels!
Mighty is the merciful power of the Guards
and Oakinisl
To you all I pay sincerest homage!
My voice and melody may not be good,
But this song will surely carry
The blessing of the Lineage,
And illustrate the gist of Buddha's teaching.
Listen, faithful Sahle Aui, the woman devotee!
If you want to cleanse the rust from the mirror
of your mind,
Look into the depth of the pure sky!
And meditate in quiet mountains
Blessed by accomplished beings!
To stay alone in a hermitage
One should know how to observe
The deep Essence of the wavering mind.
Listen carefully, Sable Aui,
As I tell you how to meditate.
To have faith unshaken
While a Novitiate of Dharma is wonderful;
Like a mountain standing firm,
Meditate with steadfastness.
To win the merits of the Buddha,
Disregard both pain and pleasure!
Like a river flowing on and on,
Meditate without interruption.
To receive the blessing from your Guru,
You should have incessant faith.
J.,ike the firmament, devoid of edge or center,
Meditate on vastness and Infinity.
To understand the innate Truth,
Unite Skill and Wisdom.
Like sun and moon in all their glory,
Meditate clearly without darkness.
Knowing that all beings are your parents,
THE HUNDRED THOUSAND SONGS OF MILAREPA
Love and show compassion to them.
Use the ocean as a parable.
Meditate without drowsiness or distraction.
To see directly the Self-mind,
You should follow straight the Guru's words.
Like this great earth,
Meditate with unshaken firmness.
To make yourself a vessel of the Dharma
Meditate beyond all words.
To realize that all things are holy Dharmas,
Watch your mind.
At all times and in all you do
Provide for yourself with care.
Deck yourself with the ornament of discipline,
Wear the clothes of patience, made of sheepskin,
Ride on the wonder horse of diligence,
And enter the holy City of Dhyana.
With the Jem of Wisdom you will be enriched.
Forget not to repay the bounty of your Guru,
But give him the best offering -
All you have experienced and realized.
Do you, my faithful daughter, understand what
I have said?
With an even greater faith in the Jetsun than before, Sable Aui
gave a great feast in his honor. Then, obediently, she renounced all
worldly affairs and went to meditate on the mountain of Nonyul in
the Nya Non area, while Milarepa left for the Red Rock of Drin.
Some time later the Jetsun saw in his so compassionate mind a
beam of glittering light shoot from a crystal stilpa, [a sign that Rech-
ungpa was having trouble in his devotions]. The fact was that Rech-
ungpa was having difficulty with his breath-control as a result of the
i>lack-magic practices that he had learned from the heretics. Seeing this,
the Jetsun thought, "What hindrance is my son Rechungpa having
now?" He then flew from the summit of the Red Rock Mountain
toward Lashi. Half way there he landed at Rechin Meditation Cave
leaving his footprints on the rock. Again absorbing himself in the il-
luminating Samadhi, he observed the fortunes of Rechungpa and saw
that neither Rechungpa's body nor life would be affected, but th
