Itinerary description
Sometimes, people stay up there, walk a bit over the crest, and take the same road back. I choose a different approach, which twice forced me to experiment. The first time was going down from the summit over a grassy hill towards the trees, a bit difficult, but impossible to make mistakes. The second time was after a long hike through the woods, when I reached a building, and where the indications to the trail going west were non-existent. But again, once you’ve realized in which direction you must go, you cannot make mistakes. After about 100 m, you'll see the trail to follow just outside of the woods. Later on, the red and white trail indications reappear.
One more warning: Be prepared for some muddy tracks. I was there after a relatively dry period, But I had to negotiate three muddy spots.
But really, the combination of a sunny autumn day and magnificent views made this a very memorable hike. I only classified this hike as difficult because of the first metres descending from the summit to reach the trail near the trees. But if you stay on the crest and take the same way back. It becomes an easy if tiring hike.
Final note: if you're using OutdoorActive (formerly Viewranger), as I do, you could get confused. On their map, Monte Pozzoni is called Monte Pizzuto. Italian guides explain that sometimes, the second name is also use. Be sure to aim for the 1903 metres summit!
Waypoints
the 360 degree views from the Monte Pozzoni
Starting towards the west, continuing clockwise
the 360 degree views from the Monte Pozzoni
View of Valle San Rufo, where we started (with a better camera you could see the plates of my car, now it's only a silvery blur)
Kruispunt
To indicate that you should turn left here. There is nothing up there
Fonte Ferrata
Just a small fountain. There are pieces of stone and older pieces of wood, suggesting this was an important drinking place for cows and sheep.
Another valley
Here the trail continues through a lovely valley on the other side of the crest we saw from the summit
Don't make the same mistake
I made a mistake here. My navigation app could not decide, so I choose to take the trail on the right. That was a mistake, don’t repeat it, and continue on the left trail. You'reach the starting point in about 20 minutes.
