Itinerary description
Mount Olympus - 2917 mts
Starting in Gortsia, a bit over the 1.000 mts of altitude, we follow a well marked and easy to identify path that, walking in a wonderful autum forest, bring you to the Plateau of the Muses by passing the Refuge Petrostrougas (1.954 mts).
We made a good stop at this refuge to recover strength and eat some good stuff.
Again up on the path to pass, over 2.200 mts, the trees line to enter in a nice wild area with the Myticas peak receiving you on the distance.
Just a few complicated steps with a wide space sensation brings you to the Plateau and with some Chamois welcoming us, we got to the Refuge G. Apostolidis (over 2.7k mts).
Good dinner and great ambiance for a good rest to get ready for the summit on the day after.
Early wake up, breakfast and the group got ready to go.
We pass below the Stefani peak in search of the east face where we climb on the east couloir that with I and some II degree passes lead you to the Myticas peak, the highest point of Greece.
Group picture and downhill home. We have made a piece of the normal way through the Skala peak to get back to the refuge.
Again, a good plate of pasta before continue the way down and, in one shot, the whole 1.7k mts descent that brought us to the cars and then to Litochoro to have a great celebration and a good Greek dinner.
Thanks to LeasePlan Greece for this opportunity to share with them this experience and can only congratulate this team that with no mountaineer experience have face this hike/climb with a lot of enthusiasm and commitment. Thanks again and see you soon on other summits.
From a technical point of view, you will see we were roped and, if you have a fair experience, you won't need it but is not a simple hike and, specially on the Skala side, the rock is really slippery due to the frequent pass of people. Special attention on the 3-4 critical point where the handholds are like marble. I don't know why but Wikiloc this time miss on the level gain as it's saying we did over 3k mts while the truth is one thousand less, a bit over the 2k mts up
