On the fourth day on the Marangu Route we climb from Kibo Hut to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro Uhuru Peak at an altitude of 5,895m.
The departure from the refuge is in the evening at half past eleven to get to the summit to admire the sunrise.
Depending on the season you can find snow, wind and lots of cold.
The climb is on a rocky ground and all in zigzags because in a few kilometers you cover a lot of altitude.
There is no technical difficulty but you may suffer from altitude sickness.
With only the light of the headlamp you can see very little but looking at the sky you can admire the show it offers.
It's quite cold in mid-January but there was no wind on the day of my ascent.
After a while I started to suffer from the altitude and so I climbed very slowly and arrived at the first panoramic point, Gilman's Point, after a good seven hours of walking. Here I admired the sunrise.
To get to the summit, despite the fact that it was a few hundred meters away, it took me another hour also because there was deep snow.
With great satisfaction I reached Uhuru Peak from where I admired the beautiful panorama of the Rebmann Glacier.
kms: about 6
Travel time for the ascent: from 7 to 8 hours
The return is made on the same road but descends more quickly covering about 4 km in 3 hours and 30 minutes passing over the parts with pebbles as if to make a slide so as to shorten the journey.
Going down you can appreciate the beauty of the high mountains.
However, the day is not over because after the lunch break we leave again to go down to the horombo Hut which can be reached in about 3 hours.
The next day we descend to the marangu gate making 20 km in 7 hours.
