Itinerary description
The Brunello Crossing is a trail running event including three races: 44 km, 23 km, and 13 km. The Brunello Crossing starts from the Fortress of Montalcino.
Montalcino provides the perfect location for trail running; large climbs and descents as well as steep trails from its highest point, 680 m.a.s.l. to its lowest at 120 m.a.s.l., through the woods, which cover about 50% of the area, vineyards, and the famous Sienese hills, marked by numerous paths, mule tracks, cart roads, and historical routes like the Francigena and the Maremmana. The 23 km race, brings you to another small hamlet, Castelnuovo dell’Abate and the Sant’Antimo Abbey, a Romanesque church where Charlemagne started the construction of the monastery in 781 on his way back from Rome along the Via Francigena pilgrim route.

Fatto oggi, 17 ottobre 2020. Purtroppo la seconda parte del percorso, dall'Abbazia di Sant'Antimo a Montalcino, presenta qualche criticità. Alla fine del boschetto che si trova dopo la Tenuta Barbi, il percorso é chiuso da due cancelli verdi (però apribili). Successivamente, un uliveto é stato interamente recintato, per cui unica alternativa é la Provinciale.
