Itinerary description
Walk starts at the Burgau parking lot, and then takes you along the Rur river into the center of Monschau. Here you cross the Rur twice and then climb towards the viewpoint beneath the ruins of the castle. From here you walk/climb to a viewpoint (see waypoint) across town. You then descend to the asphalt road from Monschau towards Imgenbroich, and descend a bit further along the road towards Monschau. You then take a smaller steeper climb up the valley slope and then continue east. The broader forest track then descends towards the municipal waste water treatment plant next to the Rur river. You continue past the plant and cross the bridge (see waypoint). You ascend along a broad forest track back in the direction of Monschau. When you join the asphalt road Schleidener Strasse there is a final climb on a grassy path before you descend into town, and cross the Rur twice. From the market place you ascend via the Eifelsteig on some stairs towards another viewpoint above the town center (see waypoint). From here you continue further to the Kierberg viewpoint and then on to another viewpoint near a small waterfall on the south side of town. Finally, you descend to the starting point.
The maximum parking fee in november 2014 was 7 euros. There are plenty of restaurants and bars in Monschau, but no catering on other parts of the route. It can be very busy in Monschau with tourists. The hike is also suited for children if they do not mind a few climbs. Especially between the bridge east of the waste water treatment plant and the Schleidener Strasse, the forest road and tracks were quite muddy, and waterproof shoes are recommended.

Picturesque historic town on the Rur with small streets, timber framed houses and slated roofs. Many tourists crowd the small streets, and there are plenty of restaurants. In Monschau center you will find a few bridges across the Ruhr, several churches, a lot of restaurants and shops, and a lot of tourists...

Mooie wandeling rond en in een mooie stad. BIj regenachtig weer goed schoeisel voorzien. Boswegen worden soms gekruist door kleine beekjes regenwater. Toch wat klimwerk, dus niet voor hartpatiënten, m.a.w. niet zo easy.
Bedankt Frank voor je review. Zitten inderdaad wat klimstukjes in. Heb de classificatie aangepast naar 'middelmatig'.

The walk is easy and the scenery is beautiful. Monschau is a very typical and picturesque village. Still, the forests around the village are not virgin nature.
Thanks for your review, pagaimo! Unfortunately, hardly any forests in this region are virgin any more.... Luckily, the scenery and nature are still worth visiting!

Great hike to view Monschau from different points of view. Very few parts on the road so you quickly feel in the wild though always close to the city.
Currently (23/12/23) some small brooks are flooding the pathway due to the heavy rains and make you cross ~10 cm deep waters
