Itinerary description

Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve. A one mile loop to look at the unusual geological feature called a tufa. These are calcium carbonate tower formed by deposits when fresh water springs erupted under the salt water lake. The water in this area is dense with tiny brine shrimp. The shores are cover with harmless brine flies. Offshore tufa towers currently have a nest of Ospreys.

Nearby Navy beach ( see waypoint) has sand tufas. The parking lot at Navy beach has access for launching kayaks.
