Itinerary description
We did this hike on Oct 30, 2011. It was a fun hike, not overly strenuous.
Base village is Shirgaon along Varandha ghat. It is about 3 hours drive from Pune. There is a road sign indicating a left turn for Mohangad. Drive a little further and you will see a temple on your left with some open space to park.
Varandha road has always been terrible. Today, the road was good from Bhor to the dam and then it deteriorated a bit. Last 5km or so before Shirgaon is absolutely terrible. Nonetheless, okay to take your car or 2-wheeler.
Just cross the road, and you see a trail going into the jungle with a series of steps. It is moderately steep climb to the main ridge. You come across a small land-slide, and a fence. The trail alternates between jungle and open meadow till you reach the final section of the climb. About the same effort as Sinhgad. About 425m elevation gain, 2.4km.
It took and hour and half to climb. There is just a small temple at the top. You can sit, relax a bit, have your lunch. Nice views. Descend takes under an hour.
