Itinerary description
This walk began and ended in the small village of Mitato. Between Krioneri and Mitato there is a gravel/dirt road so one option would be to begin in Krioneri instead. Or to start in Karidi by the road from Zakros. The area is very nice with three small villages, almost abandoned but with ongoing renovation for summer houses. Remote, ancient landscape with sheeps and goats, small vineyards, vegetable fields at 500-600 m above sea level. Be aware that the Sitia geotrail hiking system as shown on maps (e.g in Karidi village) is rather difficult to follow. We found no marked hiking trail between Mitato and Vryssidi, and at Vryssidi we could not continue to Karidi (dead end; confirmed by villagers). We had to walk back towards Mitato and take the gravel road instead. Still, I see from another Wikiloc track that there might be one so this is really unclear. Overall, gravel roads are a very good option for walking, there is hardly any traffic.
