Itinerary description
This is a hard hike, but doable for anyone in good shape. Navigation was easier than expected. While the trail isn't marked (with the exception of flagging in a few places), it's generally pretty obvious. Where other paths diverge from it, it's generally clear which is the most heavily traveled, and as long as you stick with that, you're fine. But there are many extremely steep stretches, which require both hands and feet to climb roots and rocks. In several places, if you're in doubt about which way to go, the right choice is usually the one going right up or down a steep slope. Carrying a heavy pack up this trail would be really tough. There were a number of blowdowns across the trail, and a few muddy patches. There's no point in hiking this trail unless you hike all the way to Mildred Lakes, which are set in a lovely basin surrounded by peaks. Before you reach the lakes, there are few views. On a Monday in August, we saw nobody else at the lakes, and only a few other day hikers on the lower reaches of the trail.
There were abundant ripe huckleberries and blueberries around the lakes, and we gorged on them. There were also some king boletes, owing to the recent rains. One of our party fished, and caught only one trout in a couple of hours of trying.
Our total round-trip mileage, including visits to all three major lakes, was 8.7, with a total elevation gain of 3000 ft.
