Itinerary description
The route from village of Mikro Papigko, through the refuge of Gamilas (Astrakas), to the peak of Gkamila (2497m).
Details:
09:00 - start from Mikro Papigko (at 1000m) until the refuge. The path is well sign-posted and visible. After first section through the forrest, later the path goes through open area without any shadow, and a hike in temperatures close to 30C is quite difficult. There is water spring on the route just before the refuge (do refill the water :-D).
11:30 - refuge Gkamilas (1900m). Path from here goes a little down to the valley with mountains lakes and up again through open area until the peak. Temperature is still a big problem with no shadow and no more water springs!
14:30 - Gkamila peak (2497m) + 30' stop. The peak offers panoramic views in all directions: Smolikas on the north, Astrakas on the south, famous Drakolimni to the west, other Timfi peaks to the east.
16:30 - back to refuge, following the same path.
18:30 - back to village, again with the same path, with a little shortcut as there were some wild horses on the path and we preffered to avoid them :-P
In general the route is very well signposted with red markings. Few springs on the way to refuge but no water afterwards. The temperatures above 30C and lots of insects are main disadvantage at this time of the year.
Level between moderate (no technical difficulties) and difficult (altitude difference and route length), depending on the hikers experience and fitness.
