Itinerary description
Metslanj mountain ( Մեծլանջ լեռ ) is the highest peak of the Tavushi mountain range ( Տավուշի լեռներ ), located close to Itsakar and Navur villages ( Իծաքար , Նավուր ), in Tavush region.
The height of the mountain is 2051 m and it opens very picturesque view to the Miapor mountain range from its summit.
◤ Information about this trail ◥
▶ Metslanj mountain is located very far from the villages and the main highway, we drove through Gegharkunik village. When we got to Ttujur village ( Թթուջուր գյուղ) , there is road going right up through the mountains (now it is partly gravel, but soon will be an asphalt )․
▶ We started our hike right from the road and return to the same point. First we head to the summit taking the left way that has more ups and downs than the right one we took on the way back, but in this case you are on the range most of the time you hike.
▶ We went back from the summit by choosing the right smooth way. It makes your way very easy and enjoyable. So if you like more gradual hikes and not into steep ascents and descents, it's better to choose this way for both ascent and descent, as it really makes sense.
▶ Whenever you plan to hike here, keep in mind that there is a stunning tiny waterfall Sharach close to that road. That trail to the fall starts from Yeghnikasar resort and it will take less than an hour to get there and return. (Look for Sharach waterfall in my trails' section).
▶ We hiked Metslanj in early spring and saw mountain huts on the way, so there is a big chance that you may meet shepherds and their cattle on the way to the summit from May till October.
I've mentioned these areas to watch out for their dogs.
▶ You follow Jeep treks most of the time to the top. No any uncomfy rocky parts on the way. Only the last 100 m you follow a tiny hidden path through the rocks.
SEASON:
▶Recommended:
It's better to hike Metslanj from April till December.
BEST SEASON:
1)From late April till mid July, when the slopes of the mountain are green and full of flowers and we have a good temperature there.
2)From mid September till late November we have golden landscapes and comfy temperature there.
▶Not Recommended:
From mid July till mid September it's very hot here, and for all the mountains in this area lower than 2500 m.
From December till April the mountain is generally full of snow, so if you are not into snow hikes, better avoid this period. There might be no snow in early December or after mid March, but it depends on season.
