Itinerary description
Mesachie mountain offers great views, a variety of forest types and a good cardio workout-all within a 10 minute drive of downtown Lake Cowichan!
The forest in the lower section of the trail is a mix of mature fir & cedar with some fine specimens of both. This is part of the "Cowichan Lake Research Station". The upper section switches to a mix of pine & arbutus and open meadow. In the spring the ground is carpeted with wildflowers.
From a series of bluffs in the upper section, there are fine views looking west to Beaver Lake & Cowichan Lake, east down the Cowichan Valley and directly down onto Mesachie Lake itself. You will often see raptors here, sailing in the thermal winds. Sometimes you are even looking down (!) on birds in flight.
The Retreads Hiking Club gives this hike an AVA rating of 4C.
