Melnik with only 365 inhabitants is the smallest city in Bulgaria, but for historical reasons it retains the title of city. The city is an architectural reserve and 96 of the buildings are cultural monuments with houses of the Bulgarian Renaissance, from the eighteenth to nineteenth centuries quite well preserved.
We leave Melnik on a steep path until we reach a hill above the city with views over the pyramids, sand and clay formations to which erosion has given them a multitude of forms. At the top of the hill are the remains of the Church of St. Nicholas, the largest and oldest church in Melnik and the Slavova Fortress with a great view over the city of Melnik. We continue up to the monastery of Our Lady Spileotisa, founded in the 13th century (year 1215), but of which there are no remains and there is only a chapel from 1940. We go back down to Melnik for take a trail that takes us to the church of Santa Petka. From the church we continue along a path that will take us to the church of Sant Jordi in Zlatolist where the bus is waiting for us.
