Itinerary description
This is another fantastic massif in Najd about 25 KMs north-south and 15 KMs east to west. The nearest town (or large village) is Dulay Rasheed, immediately to the east.
There are many places to get close to the mountains, which reach around 1,300 metres and numerous wadis head off on an east-west axis (i.e. trying to walk north to south would be a serious up-down-up-down... undertaking, although probably possible over 2-3 days!)
The wadis I hiked often opened up into delightfully peaceful and tranquil basis, full of vegetation. The surrounding rockscape is marvelous for climbing and bouldering, with solid granite rock faces and the weirdest rock formations and shapes. Some boulders in the 3 or 4 wadis I walked up/down were the size of 2 buses. The sunset was amazing although visibility was not the best at the time.
In the higher basis where I camped the second night, there are interesting signs of human activity but from years gone by (including what look like graves and a kind of shelter with mud walls in front of a huge boulder. There is virtually no litter, which suggests recent human activity is very limited.
At this time of year (mid-December), the days were perfect but I found the nights a little chilly for my taste. There were signs that water collects in quite deep pools on the smooth rockfalls after rainfall, but there was no water when I was there. And as for wildlife, all I saw/heard over 3 days/2 nights were birds.
