THE HUNDRED THOUSAND SONGS OF MILAREPA
I cannot but be pleased and most delighted.
Listen to me, my good young women.
I have more questions still to ask.
I shall make no false remark,
But only utter sincere words.
From whence did you come this morning,
And whither will you go this afternoon?
Where is your home and what your family?
What do you do with your magic powers?
What magic power can you bestow?
How came you to know of me?
Was it through hearsay, or have we met before?
Let no hesitation block your speech.
Please answer me with honest words.
The fairies replied, "You are the Jetsun, the supreme being. In your
past lives you must have accumuulated many merits. Thus you were able
to meet a unique and accomplished Guru. With a heart full of the nec-
tar-like Dharma, you have fully realized the fallacy and illusiveness of
worldly pleasures and desires. Thus, great compassion and benevolence
arose in the depths of your heart, and a determination to cross the peri-
lous, rolling river of Saqtsara was established. Through great hardships
and austerities you have devoted yourself to the practice of Dharma.
Having perfectly mastered the illuminating Samadhi within, you also
attained great miraculous powers by means of which you are able to see
·people's private affairs and thoughts [clearly and vividly)like images re-
flected in a mirror. Although you are perfectly aware of our families,
lineages, and other things, still you pretend [not to know), and ask us
about them. Surely, we shall be glad to tell you the full truth. Great Jet-
sun, please give us your attention for a moment, and listen to our song."
And they sang melodiously together:
At this sad time of Five-defilements
Near Pakshu in Tibet, the home
Of the red-faced demoness, was born
A rare man in Snow Valley,
Surrounded by evil, icy hills.
Is he not the great Yogi, Mila?
Because of your worthy deeds in previous lives
You have met an accomplished Guru,
And are blessed by the divine Lineage.
Bathed in the Nectar Stream of Grace,
You have transformed your mind.
Thus you see all pleasures and glories
As phantom-like delusions.
Having left this world so hard to leave,
Diligently you persist in your devotions
Allowing nothing to distract you.
So you have become a heavenly yogi
Forever dwelling in the Realm of Dharmakaya.
Staying on the plane that is "Away-from-Playwords,"
You can use the power of that Samadhi, transforming
Into many forms-
A reward for conquering all the elements.
Yet even without it, all evils have you conquered.
Seeing the miracles that you have wrought,
Your faithful disciples were inspired and heartened;
Filled with wonder, and with joyful hearts,
Their hair stood up and their tears ran down.
Oh, you are the Jetsun, the Pearl of the Crown.
To you, all homage and offerings should be made.
You are the Jetsun Yed Pa,7 Buddha's son,
The refuge of all sentient beings.
We, the five sky-going maidens
From a non-human tribe,
Who now sit beside you,
Are low in birth and lesser still in merit.
Pray, take pity on us with your great compassion!
From the clouds of your grace,
We pray the rain of nectar soon will fall
Whereby the obstinate passions- the cause of all evils
[In the world] -will be appeased,
And the precious bud- the supreme Bodhi-Mind- will
flower.
You are the master of Yoga,
The majestic Yogi of Forbidden-Acts
