Itinerary description

Not the route I intended but weather prospects and overgrown paths meant a change of plan.
However, this route turned out to be a good choice as clouds descended and obscured ground above 800m.
Plenty of public car parking can be found at Maro. From the west roundabout on the outskirts of the village take the minor road which passes under the motorway. After a short distance this becomes unsurfaced and deteriorates into the stream bed. The Arroyo Sanguino which forms the path twisting amongst pines and scrub for approximately 3kms before a right turn marked by a small stone cairn indicates where the path leaves and begins a climb to meet with another path from the right.
Turn left here and continue towards the skyline where the ruins of Cortijo Almachares are just visible. This is an opportune spot for a rest and to let your imagination try and work out how things would have been in days long gone.
Re-join the path until it meets with the track leading up to Cortijo de la Civila at a small 'garage' style building. Go uphill to the extensive ruins of the old cortijo.
Retrace your steps passing the 'garage' and at the collado turn right following the path to the ridge of Tajo Baena. Here nature has provided a useful stone outcrop to rest upon and take in the extensive view westwards.
Continue along the path as it makes a twisting and steep descent, with some loose stones to be aware of. The path exits into the Barranco de la Higuera where a left turn takes you quickly to the El Pinarillo-Fuente Esparto track. Follow the track left all the way into Maro where it joins the village near to the Caves.
A walk through the village will give you the opportunity to quench your thirst and possibly hunger!
