Itinerary description
Take the 16 bus out of Dublin City centre to Marlay Park. Starting at the entrance to Marlay Park House, look out for signs for the Way. There's a pleasant cafe (called the Wicklow Way) on the opposite side of the park. Walk adjacent to the main road & pass beneath. There's a country lane that takes you up to Kilmashogue Woods whereby the road turns to forestry track. It's a steady hike up to Ticknock & the Two Rock Mountain. A well signed path off to the right takes you up past the Fairy Castle where the WW meets the Dublin Mountains Way. Further along you pass the entrance to Tibradden Woods but keep on straight down to the Ballybrack Road.
Keep left & stay on the road down the Glencullen valley.
We decided to take a diversion here & to stop at Johnny Foxes for lunch, the highest pub in Ireland & well worth the visit. It's a 20 min extra walk either way.
After a rest return to the signed turn left & down to the Glencullen River. And then it's a gradual ascent through forestry tracks where eventually the track turns to a fine path with excellent views out over Dublin & Dun Laoghaire port.
After another 10 minutes we left the WW trail & turned left for Enniskerry. The path is quite uneven & boggy in places & descends through forestry eventually emerging out onto a forestry road. Turn right & follow this track down to the road (I made a mistake here & added a few extra minutes to the walk but, it should be easy to figure it out). At the main road turn left & further down the hill, look for a path off to the right. At this point I was just winging it & found a way down to the Glencullen River. The path is tricky places, overgrown & steep but, eventually you come out by a bridge. Cross the river & follow the track to Enniskerry. Further down the river I tried a diversion off to the right but, I had to back-track as the path became too steep.
At Enniskerry check out the quirky shops & cafes. We stayed overnight in the Inn.
One observation with the Way is unfortunately you need to go off the track at times to find accommodation, food & drink etc - at the time of writing the Knockree An Oige hostel was closed so, choices were limited.
Enjoy this most beautiful part of the world. If you get the weather, it's spectacular!
