Itinerary description
A multidimensional trail, partly hiking, partly tourist walking. Starts at the Marathos pick nick area. After a short walk on the main road, go down the forest road towards Farkonia. The area is always shaded, so it is suitable for summer walking as well.
Don't take the right junctions towards the ancient village of Troullinos. Keep straight and enjoy the thick pine forest (both brutia and black) with lots of wild vegetation. Dur to the humidity and the water here, it is very pleasant during the summer! Keep straight towards Pedoulas. Closer to the village, the area of Epta Vryses... is a gem! Lots of small streams and beautiful colors created from the autumn leaves of the plane trees.
You soon join the paved road of Pedoulas and continue until you reach the area of Vrysi. From there I have followed the 'internal' Pedoulas nature trail. It is very well signposted, and very well designed! Loads of water everywhere! You also have the chance to visit the 3 'older' churches of Pedoulas (Panagia Voreini, Agia Paraskevi, and Agia Marina), plus the Crown Jewel of Pedoulas, the UNESCO Heritage site of the Church of Arhangelos Mihail. Don't miss the chance to experience the exquisite frescos by painter Minas, and admire the northern part of the double roof, which almost touches the ground!
For the return, I've chosen the 'harder' and longer path from the main road. You can of course return using the original road you came from.
Things to note: there are a couple of places in the 'internal' Pedoulas trail which are perhaps not suitable for children, or for people with low agility. One is when you go down from 'Vrysi' towards the river, following a narrow old aqueduct. It gets a bit too narrow at one point. The second is before you meet the road to Panagia Voreini. A rocky path which requires attention, especially if it is wet. Nothing too dangerous, just normal precaution required.
You can transform this trail into a 1-day excursion if you stay for food in Pedoulas (lots of great places to enjoy local food there), and return in the afternoon. Which ever way you do it, this is very enjoyable! 🙂
