Itinerary description

This trail is located in the Marathon Recreation Area, Bienville National Forest, Mississippi (its facilities are described below). The lake is 50 acres in size and the Forest Service trailhead sign says the trail around it is 1.7 miles although the GPS on my phone said 2.1 miles.

This track starts and ends at a campsite we occupied. It looks though like the USFS considers the trail to start at the east side of the west arm of the lake in the day use area. The trail is very level. Along the east arm of the lake there could be a lot of mud after a rain. Several days after a rain we found the mud to be firm but just a bit slippery in spots. The trail along the east side of the east arm is inland a bit through a primarily pine forest with some deciduous trees lakeside. The USFS periodically sets ground fires to keep the forest floor free of debris. In early April it was essentially bug free.

The URL for the webpage of the recreation area is

This short description came from that webpage:

Marathon Recreation Area is equipped with 34 campsites with water and electric hook-ups, a boat ramp, swimming area, two bath houses with warm showers, picnic shelters, picnic tables and a hiking trail. A dump station is available. The area has a volunteer campground host on site most of the time.
