Itinerary description
A trail to Cerro Manquehue (1638m) through Cerro Carbon (1336) is a good one day trek in Santiago, with great views of the city and the Andes (on a clear day). Cerro Manquehue is a proper mountain, with rocky summit, fauna (condors) and flora. The descent from the top is pretty steep. Cerro Carbon is a smaller mountain on the way. It's closer to the city centre and it's worth getting there as well. There are no places to get drinking water on the way so prepare accordingly.
This trail is reachable by public transport in Santiago. It starts at Collegio St. George. To get there, take the red metro line 1 to Escuela Militar and then take the bus C22 in the direction Los Curros. Leave the bus at the El Mercurio stop, cross the street, and take C22 in the opposite direction to ride one stop to Collegio St. George (the bus from Escuela Militar doesn't stop at the Collegio). It's easier than it sounds and can be done using one ticket. The trail finishes at the Santa Maria shopping mall. You can take the bus C14 back to the Escuela Militar metro station.
