Itinerary description
Nice circular hike in quiet surroundings, with the Our valley and wide views. I did this hike when there was a 20 cm snow cover which gave additional esthetic pleasure. The hike is on paths, field roads and minor asphalt roads, and crosses the German border. You can park at the start, next to the church in Manderfeld and the Eifeler Hof, the only restaurant along the route. I saw a fox during the hike near the Our.
You first take a look behind the Sankt Lambertus church and then take the road towards Berterath. After about 400 meters you take an unpaved field road, which takes you down to the Our. Just before the Our I spotted a fox closeby basking in the sun. The fox disappeared into a culvert. You cross the Our on a foot bridge, and then take a path uphill through the forest towards Weckerath. You leave the forest after a while and the views open up, first to the east, and later across the Our valley. The track ends up at the crest of the hill, in the hamlet of Weckerath, where you have great views towards Schneifel. You follow the asphalt road west, then take a minor road going down towards the Auw valley. The minor road becomes a path, crosses a forest and ends up at a foot bridge across the Auw stream. You cross the Auw and the border into Germany, and then follow a field road (later turning into asphalt) along the Our towards Verschneid. At Verschneid, you cross the Our walk uphill through the village for a while and then take a path uphill, passing by the Belgian border, and continuing to the road to Manderfeld. You cross the road and climb to the crest of the hill, the last part a bit steeper. The border follows the crest of the hill, where you have great views again, and you follow it towards Manderfeld. A bit further you descend back to the road, and then follow it back into Manderfeld.
