A great way to get to know Manchester is by walking along the canals that remind us of the origins of the Industrial Revolution when they were used to transport coal to the cotton factories.
Today, these are paths that people frequent for jogging or walking with sticks, as no one else does but us, enjoying the water, the greenery and the freshness of the northern summer, eating the blackberries on the riverbank.
The Bridgewater Canal takes us to Manchester United Stadium.
The Manchester Ship Canal, which continues as the River Irwell, takes us to the city centre and along the way we come across the Opera House, the Manchester Art Gallery, which we enter, and the surroundings of Picadilly.
The Ashton Canal takes us to the National Cycling Centre as we watch one of the locks in operation, which in this case lowered a boat some three metres in height.
My friend Paqui was very keen to see the velodrome where her son won a silver medal at a world championships. They kindly let us in and after taking a photo we headed back to our student residence.
We return by the shortest route, a very comfortable sidewalk to walk on, but when we get home we realize that we have missed the opportunity to walk along the Rochdale Canal... a walk that we reserve for another occasion.
