Arriving at this site gave me an inexplicable feeling of well-being. But for that I had to go through some very stressful moments first. I was traveling with some friends in a car and when I started the climb, I had a vertigo attack because the car had difficulty climbing the steep slopes with a 10 percent difference in level. And to add insult to injury, halfway down the road we came across a sign indicating that the road was blocked by landslides. It was no longer possible to move forward and the only thing left was to go backwards without leaving the track. For this reason, I decided to get out of the car and walk up the hill, as others were doing. The fear in my body lasted all day. Fortunately, upstairs, in the monastery, I found the calm that I had lost. It is not in vain that they call this place Colina de la Luz.

Vulcana-Bai (Road to Bunea Monastery) - Strada Armas Bunea

To get to the Bunea Monastery (S. XVII) take this road (Strada Armas Bunea) in the town of Vulcana-Bai. It is a road paved with cement. It has no asphalt. There are very strong ramps, with a difference of 10% or more. It is an area where landslides and cuts occur. That's why I recommend leaving your car in the car park at the bottom of the hill. It is a very rich wooded area and very dense with vegetation. The entire route is marked with religious panels, imitating the path of an open-air Stations of the Cross. For lovers of mountain biking, this is an ideal place to exercise. When I was there, there were some hard-working cyclists trying to climb this world-class pass. You can do the entire route on foot and it is about 3 km round trip from the car park. https://www.google.ro/maps/@45.0641959,25.3669793,875m/data=!3m1!1e3

Vulcana-Bai (Road to Bunea Monastery) - Strada Armas Bunea (Parking lot)

I recommend leaving the car here and continuing on foot. The track is all concrete. There are some very steep slopes, with a 10% slope. When I was there, there were landslides and you couldn't get to the top.

Monumental gateway to the monastery. It looks like an outdoor altarpiece. On the access road, there are other very original monuments, such as the monument to the mule.

Manastirea Bunea Monastery (s. XVII) (Vulcana-Bai) - Romania

The monastery was founded in 1654, by the dignitary of Voivode Matei Basarab, vel Bunea Grădişteanu, son of Vâlcu from Orbeasca. The monastery benefited from donations, exemptions and privileges made both by the family of the founding boyar and by various voivodes. Thus, in addition to the donation from 1622 of the elders from Brăneşti, as well as the one from 1623, made by Nedelea and her son from Brăneşti, the monastery benefits from the donation of Bunea the treasurer, consisting of the church itself. The monastery also benefits from the privileges: St. Martyr Constantin Brâncoveanu, Ştefan Cantacuzino, Ion Mavrocordat and Mihail Racoviţa, from privileges and "princely miles". In 1726, Climent Grădişteanu, the abbot of the monastery, dedicated the Bunea Monastery to the Metropolitan Church of Ungrovlahia, "so that the hermitage would be under the guard and care of the holy metropolis forever". From an architectural point of view, the church of the Bunea monastery has the shape of a rectangular nave (without side apses), the nave being separated from the narthex by two octagonal pillars. The original painting, from the 17th century, was destroyed during the repairs made, being covered by the one from 1785. At present, this painting is also seriously damaged, in better conditions being the iconostasis. Outside the church, on the south side, there are still traces of the painting from 1785, with scenes regarding the Last Judgment, Saints George and Dumitru, the Holy Emperors Constantine and Helen and the Holy Three Hierarchs. The Bunea Monastery benefited from various donations, exemptions and privileges made, both by the family of the founding boyar and by various voivodes.
