Malta: Valletta, City Walk

We beginnen onze wandeling aan het busstation, nabij het grote rondpunt met de Triton Fontein. Door de City Gate betreden we het historische deel van Valletta.
We wandelen even de zeer drukke, maar verkeersvrije winkelstraat Triq Ir-Repubblika (Straat van de Republiek) in, tot aan St-Johns Co-Cathedral.

We started our walk at the bus station, close to the large roundabout with the Triton Fountain. Through the City Gate we entered the historical part of Valletta.
We strolled along the large and very busy pedestrian street Triq Ir-Repubblika (Street of the Republic) up to St John's Co-Cathedral.


Daarna gaan we langs de Triq Nofs-In-Nhar (South Street) naar de Kastilja. Deze Auberge de Castille, ooit gebouwd door de Johanieterorde is nu de ambtswoning van de eerste minister van Malta. We gaan nog even verder tot in de Upper Barracca Gardens, waar om stipt 12u00 de Saluting Batteries het middaguur begroeten met kanonschoten.

Then we went along Triq Nofs-In Nhar (South Street) to the Kastilja. This Auberge de Castille, once built by the Order of Saint John, is now the official residence of the Prime Minister of Malta. We went a little further to the Upper Barracca Gardens where at exactly 12h00 the Saluting Batteries salute noon with gunfire.


We keren terug naar het Kastilja en gaan rechtsaf de St-Pauls street omlaag tot aan de Old Theatre street, waar we naar rechts de trappen omlaag gaan.
Beneden slaan we linksaf de Triq Lvant in, naar de Lower Barracca Gardens.
Hier aan het World War II Siege Bell monument heeft men een mooi uitzicht over de haven, de stad en de St-Elmo bridge. We volgen de straat langs de zeezijde naar Fort St. Elmo en het Oorlogsmuseum.

We returned to the Kastilja and went right into St Pauls Street, down to the Old Theatre Street, where we descended the stairs to the right.
Downstairs we turned left into Triq Lvant, onto the Lower Barracca Gardens.
Here at the World War II Siege Bell Monument, one has an outstanding view of the harbor, the city and the St. Elmo bridge. We then followed the road along the seafront to Fort St. Elmo and the War Museum.


We blijven de straat aan de zeezijde volgen en gaan terug naar het centrum voor een bezoekje aan de St-Paul Church en het Our Lady of Mt. Carmel klooster.
Wat verderop wachten de terrasjes op Republic Square. We gaan achter het Grand Masters Palace en de University of Malta rond, terug naar de Old Theatre Street.

We continued to follow the street on the seaward side and returned downtown to visit St Paul Church and the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel convent. A bit further on Republic Square the outdoor cafes were waiting. We went around behind the Grand Masters Palace and the University of Malta back to the Old Theatre Street.


Beneden aan de trappen gaan we deze keer naar rechts door Victorias Gate en door de tunnel tot aan de aanlegplaats van de grote cruiseschepen.
Achter het Boffa hospitaal klimmen we door het Gannado Gardens park (met kattendorp) terug omhoog naar de achterzijde van de busterminal om onze wandellus aan het rondpunt met de Triton Fontein te sluiten.

Downstairs we went this time to the right, through Victoria's Gate and through the tunnel to the berths for the large cruiseships. Behind Boffa hospital we climbed through the Gannado Gardens park (with cats village) up to the back of the bus terminal, closing our walking loop at the roundabout with the Triton Fountain.

Opmerking: probeer niet om met de auto naar Valletta te rijden, want het is er grotendeels autovrij en er is nauwelijks parkeerplaats te vinden. Wij parkeerden op de grote parking in de voorstad Floreana: in de zeer lage parkeerkost is transport per shuttle busje naar en van Valletta inbegrepen.

Remark: do not try to drive in to Valletta, the city is largely pedestrianized and there is hardly any parking. We parked in the large car park in the suburb of Floreana. The (inexpensive) parkingfee includes transfer by shuttle bus to and from Valletta.
