Today I wanted to hike this tour - it was a flop. Many sections of the route are closed with high fences that cannot be climbed over. In addition, the part that I was able to walk is not pretty as garbage was dumped all along the side of the path. I can only advise against this tour - it should actually be deleted because it is not possible as described.
I can only suggest you have taken the wrong path. there are gates, which can be hard to find, but we did it. The way up from Malia, and down to Stalis is fully described on lots of sites, but look at- https://www.villalemonia.co.uk/news/walking-from-malia-to-mochos-to-stalis/ for more info.
I can't do anything about the rubbish though, it annoys me as well.

Sorry, I followed your directions on my mobile phone after downloading the GPS-Data exactly. There were several gates that could not be opened and one gate had a warning sign.
