Itinerary description
Exceptionally beautiful trail with a variety of natural and historical points of interest.
I stayed in Hrensko, near Schmilka, and Königstein. The walking surface is, for the most part, a forest trail, with some short stretches of asphalt and cobbles. This section includes several intense ups and downs, including steps and ladders. There are a few restaurants in Schmilka, several on the way and in Königstein and a big shop in Königstein.
From Schmilka, I took a ferry across the river. It goes every 10 mins or so. The trail immediately starts climbing to the village of Schoena. The next 10 km are relatively flat, through some fields and small villages. After the village of Kleinhennensdorf, the trail starts ascending again towards Papststein. There is a small, but lovely cafe on top where you can enjoy lunch or a drink with a view. There is a short descent to the road, then another short climb to a viewpoint. You descend into the villages of Gohrisch and Pfaffendorf and then brace for a near vertical ascent to Pffafenstein. After coming down, it's an easy cruise along a wide forest trail, followed by the final decent into Königstein. There's a variety of accommodations and transport options available there.
