Itinerary description
Exceptionally beautiful trail with a variety of natural and historical points of interest.
I stayed the night in Hohnstein and Ostrau, both of which are served by bus as well. The walking surface is, for the most part, a wide forest trail or road, well maintained and marked. This section includes several steep ups and downs. There are one or two cafés and restaurants, but no shops along the way.
From Hohnstein the forest trail leads to the Brand-Baude inn where you can enjoy somewhat overpriced drinks and a spectacular view. The trail continues with a long and very steep descent, followed immediately by a steep climb to the tiny village of Waitzdorf where you might find a bakery or tavern if you need to recover. Another long descent takes to you to Kohlmühle and some abandoned, but still imposing industrial architecture. Just after the village of Altendorf (May 2022) there was a clearly marked short deviation, due to trail damage. From the end point, I walked several km off trail to my accomodation in Ostrau. Another few km or a short bus ride takes you to Bad Schandau, which offers shops, a range of accommodation and transport.
