Itinerary description
Exceptionally beautiful trail with a variety of natural and historical points of interest.
I reached the start in Pirna by train and G/L bus (Liebethaler Grund). Stayed the night in Hohnstein. The walking surface is varied between forest trails, cobbles and pavement, mostly wide and well maintained. This section includes several not long, but quite intense ups and downs (including some stairs). There are a few cafés and restaurants, but no shops on the way.
From Pirna you start out following a small river, going through some fields and villages and a nice sandstone section to the town of Wehlen. It could be a good lunch or ice cream break spot. You will need the energy for the upcoming climb towards Bastei, the most iconic point of the Malerweg. Avoid coming here on the weekend, it was wildly crowded. Through the thinning crowds, you come all the way down to a small river which you follow to Rathewalde. The trail through the woods to Hohnstein includes a few more viewpoints. Trail markers are present throughout, but failed at the last moment - around km 24, make sure to follow the ruined wall up the hill, there are some quite hidden stairs hewn into the rock at the end of it. There's a café or two in Hohnstein and a bus stop.
