Itinerary description
Magura is a spread out village next to - or rather engulfed by - the Piatra Craiului National Park (Königstein).
Its vicinity to Brasov and Bran makes it a popular hiking area - though in early May we found ourselves mostly the only hikers on the trails. Magura has a good infrastructure, notably Villa Hermani, but also many other pensions and small hotels.
Having settled into the comfortable Villa Hermani, there was still time to explore its surroundings. Be warned, our trail is not the usual afternoon village stroll. There is a lot of up-and-down in the area. Our hike has short stretches of paved and unpaved road, but also 'shortcuts' across steep hills and meadows following faint tracks - particularly between the Monastery and waypoint 2, and between the bat cave and waypoint 10.
Note that the general altitude of our recorded GPS elevation is 'off' (higher) than the real elevation, by about 180 meter. The highest point is therefore not 1366 Meter but about 1185, and the lowest point is not 1053 but 870 Meter.

Generally a good walk, with great views, although involving a fair bit of walking on roads. We did it on a Sunday in October, which wasn't the best as the area was fairly crowded and there was a fair bit of traffic. The second half of the walk, from Pestera back to Magura was definitely better.
The GPS track is a bit awry near the monastery (waypoint MV-01) as it appears to show it going through the house at the end of the road. Looking at the photo later I realised that we should have been on the ground above the house on the left hand side. In other words, the GPS track should have been a bit more to the south east.
Instead we retraced our steps from the house, and followed a wide muddy track up until near its end we followed a little path which led into some woods, going south-east. After going through the woods for a couple of hundred metres we came across a wide gravel track which led steeply up to the Magura to Pestera road.
Also, after the bat cave you have to turn left down a grassy bank, and this involves crossing a wooden fence into what appears to be private land. It wasn't indicated as a footpath, so we were unsure about taking it. Fortunately a man who lived in one of the lower houses happened to be passing and he agreed to show us the way. He led us down the bank, past the front door of the first house and round the right hand side of the building behind to find the path leading down to the stream.
After that it was easy, just following beside the stream until we encountered the track coming down from the right, which became our road back to Magura.
