Itinerary description

Mælifellshnjúkur (1138 m) is one of the most imposing mountains of Skagafjörður, Northern Iceland, from where you can see far into the highlands of Iceland.

If it is still too early to drive 756 road (due to thawing soil or winter conditions) and you want to climb this mountain (or you want a little more challenging trail than official one) but don't want to go 8 km to the starting point of the official trail, you can park your car at the crossroads of roads 751 and 756, walk the road 756 for about 4 km along the fence, turn at the end of it and follow it up the mountain through narrow ridge. From this point you have approx. 3 km hike one way on relatively easy terrain, the only difficulty is narrow ridge with loose stones at about 800 m a.s.l.

The trip was 8 hours in total. Walking the 756 road took us 1 hour one way and we had few breaks for photos and snacks so the climb itself (from the end of the fence) should be approx. 5 hours at leisurely pace, both ways.
