Gangan hefst við skilti á vegi 756, fyrst er gengið í sveig austur og svo norður fjallið. Mælifell er staðsett mjög sunnarlega í Skagafirði og stendur í þokkabót stakt svo útsýnið frá toppi fjallsins er feiknalegt og stórbrotið.
Turn off Skagafjarðarvegur (Road 752) just south of Steinsstaðir, drive up Efri Byggðarvegur (Road 751) and then go approximately 8km on Road 756 up Mælifellsdalur valley along Mælifellsá river. You will reach the information sign below Mælifellshnjúkur mountain marking the starting point of the walk. The path is marked. It leads you to the top of the mountain, rising 1.147m above sea level. The upper part of the mountain consists of tuff (a type of rock made from volcanic ash) and basalt (volcanic rock, formed from the rapid cooling of lava), created during a volcanic eruption during the ice age. Return the same way. Be mindful of steep inclines and rocks on the path.
Für die Anfahrt biegt man vom Skagafjarðarvegur (Route 752) südlich von Steinsstaðir auf den Efri Byggðarvegur (Route 751) und dann circa 8 kilometer auf Route 756 in das Tal Mælifellsdalur am Fluss Mælifellsá entlang. Man parkt am Informationsschild am Fuße des Mælifellshnjúkur Berges, wo man auch den Anstieg beginnt. Der Weg ist markiert und führt zum Gipfel des Berges, 1.147 Meter hoch. Der obere Teil des Berges besteht aus Tuff, eine Art von Stein die aus Vulkanasche geformt ist, und Basalt, ein vulkanischer Stein der bei der rapiden Kühlung von Lava geformt wird. Diese Steine wurden während eines Vulkanausbruches in der Eiszeit geformt. Man folgt denselben Weg zurück zum Parkplatz. Der Weg ist teilweise steil und es können Steine auf dem Pfad liegen.
