Itinerary description
This trail won my heart - it's relatively short, not difficult and fantastically beautiful. Almost the whole way you go along the gorge with a small all season mountain river flowing at the bottom. The views around and in the gorge are breathtaking.
The trail is linear, so it can be started either end. In addition it gives a possibility to visit the famous Macheras Monastery. As well this trail commemorates the feat of Grigoris Afxentiou, one of the leaders of EOKA movement, who was burned alive in his hideout near Macheras.
The nature along the trail is really diverse with plenty of endemic plants, like golden oak, as well as pines, sycamores, hawthorns, terebinths, wild cyclamens, etc
TERRAIN: narrow forest or rocky paths most of the way. From my starting point continuous ascent, mild at the beginning and more steep closer to the end. Hiking boots as well as poles are advisable.
SEASON: the trail is mostly exposed to the sun with constant shade for about 30%. If you choose early mornings or late evenings there gonna be more shade due to the position of the sun. Overall the trail is better for cooler seasons. Autumn is especially beautiful due the change of colors in the gorge.
In cooler and rainy seasons there are a lot of seasonal rivers run over the trail, so be prepared for wet crossings.
SIGNS: there are plenty of plant signs, some of which faded. Plenty of resting places (I took pictures of about a half). Just a couple of direction signs but trail is well definable.
KIDS: Ok for kids of all ages with adult supervision at some spots.
! I saw a snake on the path, so be vigilant !

What an absolute gem of a route. Highly recommended. Wear appropriate footwear and be extra vigilant due to cliff edges. Caution if walking with small children or infirm. Opportunity for a dip at the end of the gorge to cool off. This app is fantastic and invaluable if your navigation not up to par and supports with finding trails not readily advertised or promoted. I love it and most definitely worth the annual subscription fee.
