Punts d’Interès i fotos:
03) Recte amunt (tirant cap a l’esquerra). Acabo d’entrar al Wicklow Way.
04) Panoràmica
04a) Dalt del primer turó ja es veu la vall on trobarem el riu Cloghoge i el primer llac, Lough Dan.
04b)
11a) Revolt molt tancat cap a l’esquerra.
12e) 12f)
15) Cloghoge Brook i Lug a’ Lágha
15a) 15b)
15c) Cloghoge Brook
15d) 15e)
17) Carretera: esquerra amunt
17a) Un altre portal i la carretera.
17b) 17c)
20) Bosc i carretera
20a) 20b) 20c) 20d) 20e)
Deixo carretera i ja sóc gairebé a Lus Mor.
Or, if you want it with English place names: Lus Mor - Lough Dan - Luggala - JB Malone Memorial (views of Lough Tay) - Ballinastoe Woods - Lus Mor. Unfortunately, Irish has been lost in most of Ireland, including here in these mountains.
Nice walk through the Wicklow Mountains National Park (Sléibhte Chill Mhantáin) in a kind of triangle that has two lakes at the vertices and my B&B, Lus Mor.
They say that in the Clochóige valley (Cloghoge in English and on the maps) the landscape of woods, pastures and the occasional farmhouse has not changed at all for two hundred years. I have found too much paved track and too much private property but also interesting details in a beautiful and authentic rural landscape that is spectacular in some places. Part of the path has coincided with sections of the Slí Cualann Nua (Wicklow Way).
Cloudy skies except for a few brief moments that have hinted that there is another Ireland, multicolored and bright.
It happened that I walked this route when they were doing forestry work, that is, they were cutting down trees. I want to assume that these are controlled works and that they will immediately replant them to cut them down in a few years and that they will grow again etc., but even so I am very sorry to see so many trees on the ground. And the landscape is not the same.
Points of Interest and photos:
01) I leave the small road of the hostel to the left
01a) The hostel has two natural and two artificial lakes very close by. As soon as you leave, you can see the Vartry reservoir on your left.
01b) Ep, on the roads here you have to walk on the right and not on the left like in Catalonia.
01c) 01d)
02) Breaking to the right
02a) You need to take advantage of this sun to take a photo right away before it doesn't go away.
02b) They don't hunt wild boar here, but there are also people who hunt.
03) Straight up (pulling to the left). Just entered the Wicklow Way.
04) Panoramic
04a) Above the first hill you can already see the valley where we will find the river Cloghoge and the first lake, Lough Dan.
04b)
04c) The Wicklow Way is part of a series of Irish long-distance routes that are being attempted to be grouped into a network that will standardize, for example, signposting. On the Wicklow Way the route is indicated by hikers and yellow arrows.
05) Junction: right
05a) I leave the Wicklow Way and turn right uphill.
05b) The sign is to indicate forestry work.
05c) First pile of logs.
06) Forest exploitation
06a) How much wood!
06b) As a result of the work, the path has disappeared (literally) and I went as far as I could along the side of a fence that must mark a change of ownership. This is not the place to talk about it but this land ownership thing is a case like a basket, everywhere and I see that particularly here in Ireland.
06c) On the other side of the fence you can see, down there, Lough Dan (by the way, a good part of its shore is also private).
07) Junction: right
07a) I take a right down a path that comes from the Wicklow Way.
07b) These tall and well-planted trees... their time will come too! Down in the background you can see the lake.
07c) For those in the lower part, the time has already arrived. Two side effects: it's so wrecked it makes it hard to follow the road, one, and it makes it hard to know when I'm on private property, two.
08) Junction: left.
08a) I turn left to the track, where I turn right.
08b) Someone must be monitoring the work from the air. In the background you can see the other lake, the Tay, which by the way belonged entirely to the Guinness family, the beer family, until they sold it to a (Swiss) foundation in 2019.
09) Scotch Village
09a) They say that the name comes from the fact that immigrant farmers from Scotland lived there.
09b) Much of the population died or left with the hunger and misery of the mid-nineteenth century (the "Great Famine" or "Potato Famine").
09c) 09d)
09e) The ruins, ruins they are, but after the felling it has an air of devastation that hurts the heart.
09f) I leave the old town with Lake Tay in front and the Dan to my left.
10) Am I entering or leaving private property?????
10a) The felling has been very brutal and parts of the road have been loaded. I honestly don't know if jumping that fence makes me exit or enter private property.
11) Junction: left
11a) Very tight twist to the left.
11b) The path descends towards Lough Dan between old houses abandoned years ago.
11c) 11d) 11e)
12) Intersection: right
12a) This time the turn is to the right.
12b) I come from this beautiful walk.
12c) When you reach the track, head left.
12d) If this is private property, it means that until now it was a public space. I continue forward and when I reach the fence I go around it to the right and down, without entering the closed boundary.
12e) 12f)
13) I cross the river Cloghoge, go to the lake and turn back to enter the valley.
13a) The River Cloghoge takes water from Lough Tay and leaves it in Lough Dan.
13b) Luckily I have my walking sticks and they help me keep my balance. The water must be freezing!
13c) The house Le Bas'
13d) This part of the lake shore is public.
13e) ...even though it's still cold to swim in it...
13f) The house seen from the lake. Now I return to continue along the right side of the river.
14) Cloghoge Valley
14a) 14b) 14c) 14d)
14e) Livestock grazing.
14f) Livestock? No, there are cows and sheep but also dozens of deer!
15) Cloghoge Brook and Lug a' Lágha
15a) 15b)
15c) Cloghoge Brook
15d) 15e)
15f) I enter the Lug a' Lágha property proper (or Luggala on most maps). Entry is allowed but no pets.
16) The valley seen from the main portal.
17) Road: top left
17a) Another portal and the road.
17b) 17c)
17d) I went up the road because I didn't know that a short distance away it links with the Wicklow Way which I did follow on the way down from the JB Malone Memorial where I now go up.
17e) Another point linking to the Wicklow Way from the road.
18) JB Malone Memorial
18a) 18b)
18c) The memorial in the foreground, in front of Loch Té.
18d) On the left is the valley I have followed from Loch Déan to here.
18e) On the right you can see the mansion and adjacent buildings.
18f) Mick Jagger to President Obama have passed through here.
19) Bifurcation: left.
19a) To the right would return to the road. The left takes me into Béal Átha na Sluaighe (Ballinastoe Woods on maps) and is the Wicklow Way.
20) Forest and road
20a) 20b) 20c) 20d) 20e)
20f) When the wooden planks turn left I can continue straight ahead and I will stop at PI17. If I continue to the left I am following the Wicklow Way until I meet the R759 road, which I take to the left for almost 1.5 kms.
21) Junction: right. I leave the road and I'm almost in Lus Mor.
