I’m keeping these summaries short as I’m on a two month tour of Ireland and there’s a lot of hills to hike and therefore lots of entries. All mapping used are view ranger digital OS 1:50 or 1:25. You will get the best results by uploading my wikiloc gpx giles into this mapping software.
Parking for this route was at a spacious car park at the top end of Glenmalur valley just before the YH. From here you go over the bridge at the top end of the car park and shortly after there is a distinct hard core trail going off left (west) uphill. This brings you out on a forest track which you follow for two kms to falls brook a cascading sheet of waterfalls where you follow a wet in places but distinct steep path which takes you to just below Cannow hill. You have been heading west until now but from here you follow the ridge south gradually uphill to the trig pointed summit of Lugnaquillia hill. The views in this clear autumn day I will add were gorgeous! Anyway head north for a while and head east towards Clohernagh but turn off mid way for the easy 2km out and back jaunt to tick off Corrigasleggaun. Keep on going to Clohernagh on good paths (all good until now) and then turn off north heading to Art’s lake on an indistinct trail for the first part. The trail drops steeply to the lake and then here follow a fence line heading north steeply downhill to a ford at Fraughan Rock glen. This decent is boggy in places. You then get back on the forestry track and retrace your morning’s trek.
All in all a cold but beautiful 16.5kms done with a surprising 945m of ascent done in 5hrs 30min. A great hike with great views on a great autumn day!
