Itinerary description
I like to start at the Western end of Calle Tecate and Avenida Juarez instead of at the dirt parking lot/trail head. This is because there is a dog watering station here to help revive the mutt at the end of the hike. But you could start in either place. The GPS track uses my preference. If you start at the parking lot, you'd take a slightly different route to the LQ Cove Oasis. Everything is the same from there.
When you get to the main trail merge (i.e. where the "stem" of the lollipop meets the "head") you can go either way. If North is Noon on your clock, I recommend going clockwise (East at the merge) in the mornings and counterclockwise (West at the merge) in the late afternoons. This will manage your shade better. The rocky prominence you go around will provide more shade for you this way. In the middle of the day, it won't matter... you'll get blasted by sunshine.
This route avoids most, but not all of the really annoying gravel traverses down in the various washes. You won't have to walk in the squishy stuff too much. You will however, have to share with cyclists. This is a popular area with them and they use the eastern part of this trail frequently.
Enjoy.
Waypoints
Merge with Boo Hoff Trail
If you're going Clockwise, you merge with SoBo Boo Hoff Trail at this point.

Trail post
Trail Post
Descend into a wash for a bit of gravel travel. It will be over soon (clockwise).
Trail Post
Stay in wash. Do not ascend hill to the SE
Leave Boo Hoff Trail
Clockwise hikers leave the Boo Hoff at this point. Boo Hoff continues to the S and then SW. Gravel ends. Climb out of wash.
Junction
Counterclockwise hikers can head South here to extend their mileage. This will link back up with the Boo Hoff farther south. (Not inc on this GPS track)
Sunrise over Hills
If you do this hike during sunrise you can watch the red and pink light hit the top of the Santa Rosa mountains and slowly descend to meet you as it gets later in the day.
Sunrise over Hills
Another shot of the sunrise. This hike is also great to do on a full moon. Take a headlamp in case of difficulty, but by and large, you can navigate solely by moonlight. Trail is very easy to see.
Looking NNE into La Quinta and Across Valley
You can take a short spur West upslope to a better lookout and viewpoint.
Main Trail Merge
Recommend bearing left in mornings and right in late afternoons for better shade
Water Fountain (for dogs, too)
Permanent water station and shade. Street Parking nearby
Junction Bear Creek Oasis Trail
Head SE across wash to link with Bear Creek Oasis Trail
Trail washed out
Recent rains have completely exposed the granite bedrock here. It's loose footing.
Permanent Water Fountain
Intermittent at best. Not always working nor clean. Best to use the one just off the street to the north.
La Quinta Oasis.
Take well defined trail NE from here if you prefer to start/finish at the the dirt parking lot.
Vehicle Barrier
On Street Parking
