Itinerary description
Beautiful loop that's more strenuous then you'd expect at first sight.
It starts on a well paved (private but accessible) road, but once down, we deviated from the main path to get up to the Luggala trail. After going a little up we veered right to get closer to the Lough Tay shores (no trail), in a quest to catch a Geocache, well hidden in the boulder-field. Hence the detour you can see on the track and slow progress. The views over the lake from Geocache were pretty nice though. Perfect lunch spot out of the wind and in the sun!
Once we got our cache, we back-tracked and scrambled up closer to the rock face where it was slightly easier going. From there following the right hand side rockface until we ended up in the gully where a bit of a path can be followed all the way up. We followed the gully the most on the right, but there's 2 more that seemed similar. however as we were already at that side, this one suited us best. Steep scramble, but definitely doable if you're somewhat experienced with this type of things.
Once up, we had a quick hop to the peak (nice 360 views there) to then go back the other way. (might have been easier to continue following the path down, but ah, why go easy :). The route we took started on a nice enough path along the cliff, but once past that, the path disappeared. Good visibility though and we knew we wanted to cross the river where it split, so visuals on that and just go.
Once crossed the streams, you can go up anywhere to the road. The road is ... well a road, but does have nice views and viewpoints along the way. If you're lucky there might even be a coffee or icecream van floating around.
