Itinerary description

Maple Trail showcases a large stand of relict Bigtooth Maple trees in fall colors. This trail is an easy hike with plenty of scenery. Maples were close to peak colors. East trail is also an easy hike until shortly after the Grotto point of interest. Trail climbed steeply, and fortunately had limestone blocks placed as steps for a section. This climb got the heart rate up for sure and not sure if it is doable with small children. Did see some dogs tackle it though!

Of course what goes up must come down and on the downhill side of this trail, shortly after Primitive Camping B intersection the trail got steep with loose, limestone rocks in a long downhill wash. Really had to pay attention to footing. Rocks were brutal on our feet and a good pair of sturdy hiking shoes/boots made it more endurable.

Once on East-West Trail the scenery was beautiful with maples at their peak colors, and the trail was very easy.

Overall a very good, not too strenuous hike for us flatlanders. Well worth it, maybe not with small kids.

Photo will not do this justice. A big, downhill limestone wash.
