Route to see the five lakes around the Vihren refuge, a mountain cabin whose name is that of the highest peak (2,914 m) in the Pirin National Park. The alpine chalet, with restaurant and accommodation service, is located at the base of the Vihren, at an altitude of 1,950 metres. And it is the last point that can be reached by road vehicle.
Numerous high mountain routes start from the hostel. In our case, we have outlined an intermediate level walk that, along 9 kilometers and 450 meters of elevation gain, allows us to discover the Okoto, Zhabeshkoto, Dalgoto, Ribno and Muratovo lakes (in that order).
NOTICE 1: the final descent to Lake Ribno is made through a pronounced scree with a drop of 50 meters (from flag 21 to 23), in which extreme caution must be exercised. Through the central part of the quarry runs, under the stones, the water that the Dalgoto lake lends to the Ribno. This current, underground at first, comes to the surface a few meters below, forming a small waterfall that is already visible, but at half the height of the wall, without waterfalls and without occupying the entire width, only its central part, leaving the free sides, at least in August, when we did the route. It is not necessary, therefore, to climb down the jabot, which would be a crazy danger.
Although we enter the scree on the right side as we descend, we cross it laterally at the top, to avoid the descent on the left flank, before the source of the waterfall. There are also milestones to climb down the right side. With wet terrain, the risk on the descent increases considerably. Dry, depending on the ability of each one, the scree is accessible as long as you have a minimum physical condition: whoever is worse at dancing between stones will take a little longer to navigate the crossing and will throw hands more often and, sometimes the bum, to the rocks: about 20 minutes.
Whoever is unable to go down and has reached this point must return to flag 27 and from there to flag 7 if they want to visit Lake Ribno. In that case, you will approach it from its north shore (we are entering from the south shore).
NOTICE 2: When the Vihren Hostel car park is full, vehicle access from the car park 2.5 kilometers below is cut off. When this second parking lot is also full, movement is restricted from a lower third parking lot (the first of the three as you get on the vehicle).
In the summer of 2023, a continuous van shuttle service was in operation to link the three car parks (about 15 passengers per vehicle and 5 leva per person each way: you cannot buy a return ticket). The vans go up and down continuously. In our case, at 10:00 a.m. the way from the second car park was already blocked.
Many foreigners are unaware of this transport system and start the climb on foot from the second parking lot to the Vihren refuge. Doing it from the third already means another 3 extra kilometres.
