Itinerary description
Trailhead for this walk is the car park for the Liam Lynch loop. From Clonmel, follow signs for Ardfinnan and then Newcastle. From Newcastle head for Goatenbridge (marked on O.S Map) as Goat's Bridge), and turn left at the brown wooden house with red painted door and windows. The car park is at the end of the unpaved road, on the right.
Follow the brown sign out of the car park and head on the commercial path for 4 kilometers to the Liam Lynch monument.(Liam Lynch was a prominent I.R.A leader during the War of Independence and the Civil War. He was killed near the monument by a National Army unit in April 1923, marking the effective end of the Civil War.)
At the back of the monument, follow a faint trail uphill through the forest, to emerge onto a rough stone path at the base of Crohan West. Turn right here, and follow the path for several kilometers, crossing the stream, and once again heading uphill. Continue on this path - anywhere along here is a suitable spot for lunch - before taking a path to your left (again uphill). After about a kilometer, look out for a number of faint trails to your right, any one of which will lead you to the forest below.
Look out for a rough path through the forest, signposted by a yellow arrow as part of St. Declan's Way, and then follow a similar arrow to your right along a green path.
This emerges onto the commercial roadway, where you will turn right.
Eventually, pick up a path to your left, again marked by a yellow arrow, and descend once again to the commercial roadway, where you will turn left.
Continue, and the car park is on your left some kilometers later.
Allow up to 5 hours for this superb 13 kilometers ramble through the lower slopes of the Knockmealdown Mountains
